Il sito del nipote della “Madre Emigrante” di Dorothea Lange

Her name was Florence, she was just 32 years old and had come from Oklahoma to California some dozen years before, to a land of promise — a promise which, for her, had not been kept.

E’ ciò che si legge nella homepage del sito www.migrantgrandson.com, accanto ad una fotografia scattata da Dorothea Lange, durante il periodo della Grande Depressione.

Roger Sprague afferma di essere il nipote di Florence (Owens) Thompson, altrimenti nota come the Migrant Mother.

Il suo sito non è stato pubblicato oggi, ma è online da un po’ di tempo, tuttavia l’ho scovato solo ora e mi è sembrato giusto scrivere due righe al riguardo.

Quando ho visto quella fotografia famosa per la prima volta, mi sono chiesto: “Che fine avrà fatto la signora della foto?”
Beh, a quanto pare sul sito di Roger Sprague c’è la risposta a quella domanda.

Then a shiny new car (it was only two years old) pulled into the entrance, stopped some twenty yards in front of Florence and a well-dressed woman got out with a large camera. She started taking Florence’s picture. With each picture the woman would step closer. Florence thought to herself, “Pay her no mind. The woman thinks I’m quaint, and wants to take my picture.” The woman took the last picture not four feet away then spoke to Florence: “Hello, I’m Dorthea Lange, I work for the Farm Security Administration documenting the plight of the migrant worker. The photos will never be published, I promise.”
